How Does Kathleen Sebelius Affect You?
This week President Obama named Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius as his Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sebelius has made a name for herself by being vocal with her staunch positions on medical insurance and environmental health. She also held the title of Kansas Insurance Commissioner and received national honors for her achievement.
The Secretary of Health and Human Services is responsible for ensuring food and drug safety, overseeing immunization services and trying to prevent the outbreak of infectious disease. The Food and Drug Administration fall under this department, as do Disease Control and Prevention.
But this description is not all-encompassing. Department officials have already reported their hopes in overturning former President Bush’s Abortion Regulation, which provided protection to doctors and nurses who refused to perform procedures because of moral qualms. While the federal law already forbids discrimination against health care professionals who object to performing abortions, President Bush sought to cease federal funding to the facilities that refuse to provide those rights. Kathleen Sebelius has publicly announced her goal to reverse this ruling.
